Oscar Piastri
Number 81 · Born Melbourne, Australia · 6 April 2001

The Journey
Melbourne-born Oscar Piastri is the most efficiently assembled talent Formula 1 has seen in a generation. He charged up the junior single-seater ladder without a single wasted season - winning the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019, the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020, and the FIA Formula 2 title in 2021 by a margin of over 50 points - before a now-legendary contractual standoff between Alpine and McLaren over his 2023 services made him the most discussed driver who had never yet started a Grand Prix. McLaren won the dispute, and Piastri has repaid them spectacularly at every turn.
His debut season produced two podiums and the FIA Rookie of the Year award. In 2024, victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan made him a Grand Prix winner, and his contributions proved vital in McLaren clinching their first Constructors' Championship since 1998. His 2025 campaign raised the bar higher still - seven victories, 16 podiums, and six pole positions, all records for an Australian Formula 1 driver - before finishing third in a thrilling three-way championship battle. In 2026, he continues as one of the two quickest drivers on the entire grid.
Calm, precise, and devastatingly economical with every input, Piastri makes the most complex racing scenarios look entirely, infuriatingly routine.
In 2026, a team of entomologists in Myanmar discovered a previously unknown species of wasp — and named it Gwesped piastrii in his honour. Making Piastri one of the very few active Formula 1 drivers to have had a living species of insect formally named after them. It is, without doubt, the most unusual tribute any driver on the 2026 grid has received.
